Rosanna Coyne, trained in finance and information systems, left her corporate job to follow her passion for woodworking and subsequently became a professional woodcarver after studying and apprenticing with Dimitrios Klitsas for many years.
Recently, she has become fascinated by turned work. Her wood bowls are turned from woods that are generally not available commercially but reclaimed logs harvested locally, wood that would have otherwise ended up as firewood. All the work is turned while the wood is green, unseasoned state. What happens to the piece as it dries, releasing the tension in the fibers, and causing the shape to shift, is an integral part of the process. While great thought and care is taken in an effort to utilize the grain and patterns of the wood itself to relate to the form of the piece, it is the form itself that excites her.
Rosanna's current focus is exploring themes, concepts and influences through the process of carving, surface texture, and other treatments on these forms.
